Why Clinton Is Really Targeting Russia: Fracking

fracking

Though Hillary Clinton has publicly claimed that she stands with communities who say ‘no’ to hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” new releases from WikiLeaks have shown that Hillary’s “private” position on this controversial practice is indeed different from her “public” stance. In excerpts of her paid speeches – which WikiLeaks has now released in various file formats – Clinton proudly showcased her support for the controversial practice, which has been linked to irreversible aquifer and ocean contamination, as well as an uptick in earthquakes. In a paid speech to Deutsche Bank, Clinton touted the federal government’s support for fracking, as well as her personal work promoting the practice worldwide, even in nations where locals overwhelmingly protested against the practice. She said that: “fracking was developed at the Department of Energy. I mean, the whole idea of how fracking came to be available in the marketplace is because of research done by our government. And I’ve promoted fracking in other places around the world.”

Later, she added:

The ability to extract both gas and oil from previously used places that didn’t seem to have much more to offer, but now the technology gives us the chance to go in and recover oil and gas. Or with the new technology known as fracking, we are truly on a path — and it’s not just United States; it’s all of North America — that will be net energy exporters assuming we do it right.

These are clearly not the words of someone who opposes fracking.

In a 2014 speech, Clinton offered a new angle regarding her opinions on fracking. In this speech, she accused environmentalists who opposed fracking and oil pipelines as being part of a Russian plot. Clinton said:

We were up against Russia pushing oligarchs and others to buy media. We were even up against phony environmental groups, and I’m a big environmentalist, but these were funded by the Russians to stand against any effort, oh that pipeline, that fracking, that whatever will be a problem for you, and a lot of the money supporting that message was coming from Russia.”

Though this could be dismissed as Clinton’s anti-Russian stance verging on the edge of paranoia, there may be some truth to this statement after all. Oil and gas companies have donated more than $1 million to Hillary’s campaign and millions more to the Clinton foundation, suggesting that Clinton has a very clear interest in protecting and expanding their business. Russia is the world’s biggest natural gas exporter and Russia’s Gazprom is a major competitor with many of the companies that donate to Clinton. For example, Russia supplies Europe with most of its natural gas, a massive market that Clinton’s donors want access to. This was first “tested out” in Ukraine first following the US-backed coup in 2014 when anti-Russian sanctions were imposed (while Clinton served as Secretary of State) in order to begin exporting US natural gas to Ukraine in order to cut out Russia’s share of the market. Ukraine was a key start as 53% of all Russian gas exports to Europe pass through Ukraine, representing over a quarter of Gazprom’s profits.

There is also significant evidence to support that Syria’s “civil war,” which threatens to lead to a full-blown war between the US and Russia, is actually all about competing natural gas pipelines. The Guardian reported that before the “civil war” in Syria began, “Assad refused to sign a proposed agreement with Qatar and Turkey that would run a pipeline from the latter’s North field, contiguous with Iran’s South Pars field, through Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and on to Turkey, with a view to supply European markets – albeit crucially bypassing Russia. Assad’s rationale was ‘to protect the interests of [his] Russian ally, which is Europe’s top supplier of natural gas.

Interestingly, Qatar donated between $1 to $5 million to the Clinton Foundation during this time and later went on to orchestrate Syria’s “civil” war along with Turkey. Escalating tensions between the US and Russia as well as deadly coups and attempted coups during Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State all share natural gas exports as a common underlying factor. Now that WikiLeaks has put to rest Clinton’s real opinion on fracking, we can safely assume that a Clinton presidency means entering the brave, not-so-new world of fracking wars.
