Donna Jou was only 19 years old when she went missing one night after answering a Craigslist Ad. It wasn’t unusual for smart students to take on summer jobs tutoring others to earn a little extra cash. For Donna, she could have never known that getting on a motorcycle on that fateful June evening was going to be the worse decision she could have ever made in her young life.

If she had only known whose bike she was getting on, she surely would have never answered the ad in the first place.

Donna had an amazingly bright future ahead of her. Graduating in May of 2006 from Clear Lake High School in California, she managed to maintain a 4.4 GPA, as well as score 1570 on her SATs. During her remaining 2 years of high school, she would spend over 100 hours tutoring others in math to help them out. And as if that wasn’t enough, she even volunteered full time at the St. John’s Hospital.

Under the supervision of Dr. Moore, she worked in the Pathology Laboratories department during the summer of 2005, hoping to one day follow her dream of becoming a neurosurgeon. She even managed to volunteer for the Interfaith Ministries, helping collect food and deliver it to those in need.

While in her senior year of high school, she decided that she wanted to join the “Independent Study Mentorship” course by NASA Senior Scientist, Dr. Deborah Harm. She had to be accepted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas in order to join in Summer High School Apprenticeship Program. Not surprisingly, she got in without a glitch.

All the while during her summer program, she also continued her amazing volunteer work by babysitting at the ‘Battered Women Shelters.’ She even worked as a volunteer at the Bay Area Turning Point Resale Shop in Nassau Bay as a cashier, and this was also in support of other women shelters. There was really nothing that this wonderful young woman couldn’t, or wouldn’t, do to help others. Her parents were proud beyond belief.

A Very Loving Family

Donna was the youngest daughter of parents Reza and Nili. She had 2 siblings, 1 sister and 1 brother, both as brilliant as she. Her parents had migrated to America to give their children a better life, like many others dreaming of better futures for the children. She was born on October 14, 1987, around 5:30 p.m. According to her father, “She was very beautiful.”

Her father Reza went on to say, “We had a birthing room for her and I was there the entire time. She was so beautiful and she didn’t cry. She just looked around with those brown eyes of hers. She was so alert and yet so tiny–just over 6 pounds. I fell in love with her immediately. She was a beautiful addition to our family.”

An Amazing Daughter

Reza adored his baby girl with the awe that most daddies have when seeing their daughter’s for the first time. He exclaims, “I couldn’t wait to come home from work to see her. And she was always excited to see me. We are very close.” He also went on to share, “She had a very giving personality. She loved to give.”

As she continued to grow into a beautiful young woman, her intelligence began to shine as well. In grade school, she was nicknamed “Super Math,” as it would seem that there was not a single math problem she couldn’t solve. Her parents raved that she never received marks below 99%. Her father went on, “I was so proud of her. She was a hard worker and never gave up.”

Donna’s father couldn’t say enough about his love and admiration for his lovely daughter. He even remembers, “I used to travel a lot for work. And when I’d arrive at wherever I was going, I would always find notes from Donna in every pocket I had. Love notes. She would always worry when I traveled and we’d talk by phone every day. If I was ever late, she’d worry and call me as soon as my plane landed.”

Answering A Craigslist Ad

So when Donna had decided to advertise her math tutoring services on Craigslist, it didn’t come as a surprise to her family. She knew that it would be a good way for her to earn some extra cash to help with her expenses for college. She had been emailing back and forth since May with a guy named Sinjin Stevens. They were finally set to meet in June to get his math tutorials underway.

At 5:30 p.m. on June 23, 2007, the supposed Sinjin Stevens came on a 1981 Yamaha motorcycle to pick Donna up for their first tutoring session. With her bag in tow, Donna got on the back of his bike and waved goodbye to her family, who were on their way out to dinner. Little did they know, this was going to be the last time they would ever lay eyes on their precious Donna.

Less than one hour later, Nili, Donna’s mother, received a message from Donna saying, “Battery’s dying. I’m in San Diego. Be home soon. I love you, Mommy.” Although for Nili, this wasn’t unusual for Donna to message her this way, she had a foreboding feeling that didn’t sit well with her. But there was nothing she could do about it at the moment but wait for Donna to get back home.

Where’s Donna?

The following day, Donna never made it to class. Her friends had found this very strange since they were certain that if something were wrong, or if she wasn’t feeling well, she would have told one of them about it. When it came time to start her work later on that day, Donna was still nowhere to be found. Her parents then came to the conclusion that she had never made it home the evening before and so began the frenzied search for Donna’s whereabouts.

Gone Missing

""

Reza and Nili Jou called the authorities right away and filed a missing person’s report. They began to wonder what could have possibly happened to their beloved daughter. They knew that this kind of behavior was very unusual for Donna. She would never just disappear without telling anyone where she was. They could hardly contain their fear as they waited to find out what could have happened to their youngest child.

Who Was Sinjin Stevens?

""
Source:http://a.abcnews.com

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department decided to start where Donna was seen last, on the back of one Sinjin Stevens’s motorcycle. Upon further investigation, they were shocked to find out that Stevens was not really who he said he was, but one Steven Burgess, a convicted child molester who had failed to register his status as a sex offender with the local police, as legally required.

During the search into Donna’s computer and other belongings, a few more details about ‘Sinjin’ began to come out. From the family’s description of his motorcycle to his roommate’s recollection of his latest activities, it would seem that Burgess had packed up his Ford Ranger pickup truck and drove off into the night. So when police began their search, Burgess himself was also nowhere to be found.

Finding A Few Of His Belongings

""

Although they didn’t have proof of it yet, police were pretty certain that they were on the right track looking for Burgess in the disappearance of Donna Jou. On a stroke of luck, someone had found a plastic toolbox tucked underneath bougainvillea vines around a mile and a half from where Burgess lived. Inside it, they found the license plate ‘SINJIN 1’, which Burgess had used on his truck. And aside from that, there was a motorcycle helmet, rope, rubber gloves and a scrub brush. All the signs looked like a classic case of abduction.

Two Weeks Later

Two weeks after Donna’s disappearance, on July 9, detectives went back to the house of Burgess to look into more possible scenarios into the events that took place. Police recovered knives in a cabinet, which were sent to forensics for testing. All the while, Donna’s family and friends could only stand by and wait, praying that somehow she would miraculously make it home, or that they would at least get more answers into her disappearance.

Finding Burgess In Florida

""
Source:https://i2.wp.com/trenchreynolds.com

Finally, a few months after Donna had gone missing, Burgess was found in Florida. He was brought back to Los Angeles and sent to the LA County Jail. His bail was set at a staggering $250,000. And yet, Burgess was able to make bail and secretly leave the state of California once again.

Luckily for the authorities, they found Burgess again sometime late September, back in Florida. He had been using the alias ‘Logan Anderson.’ He had even acquired fake identification using the same name, such as a Social Security Card and Driver’s License. When he was once again extradited to Los Angeles, his bail was set at $500,000, making it twice as steep to pay his way out.

Still Searching For Donna

""
Source:http://www.donnajou.com

On October 10, Burgess was convicted for 3 years for failing to register as a sex offender. Despite the fact that this had nothing to do with Donna, the family could at least be assured that whom they believed had any knowledge of Donna’s disappearance and possible death was, currently, behind bars. They needed to find more evidence tying him to her abduction while they continued to search for her whereabouts.

Ask Burgess

During the time that Burgess was in jail, the authorities, family, friends and 198 other volunteers searched for Donna alongside the Trinity Search and Rescue Team. They scoured the Santa Monica Mountains but sadly came up blank. They insisted on continuing to ask Burgess about Donna, but he remained completely silent on the subject.

One Year Later

""

Finally, one year later, while Burgess was serving time at the California Correctional Institute, he finally confessed to the involuntary manslaughter and concealment of the accidental death of Donna Jou. At the same time, he was also convicted of selling or transporting both cocaine and heroin.

The Truth Finally Comes Out

""
Source:http://latimesblogs.latimes.com

According to Burgess, on the day that Donna came to his house in Los Angeles for “tutoring,” he gave her a mix of cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. He then says that when he woke up the next morning, Donna was dead. It would seem that she had overdosed from the concoction. He completely freaked out, claiming he “made a really bad decision” and took her body on his sailboat to dump her in the ocean.

Could It Be True?

""

Although the Jou family feared the worst, hearing the devastating news was still so heartbreaking. According to the Jou family’s attorney, Gloria Allred, “It’s been heartbreaking for the Jou family not to have known what happened to their daughter. They knew she was last seen with John Steven Burgess at his home.” Plus, the idea that their straight A, honor roll, 4.4 GPA wielding daughter could have been involved in something like this was beyond their craziest imagination.

A Slap In The Face

""
Source: http://www.ocregister.com

Allred continued by saying, “It was also excruciating for them to learn that Mr. Burgess indicated that he had information about Donna but declined to provide that information to authorities unless a deal was made in reference to this prosecution for failing to register as a sexual predator.” Burgess was only given five years in prison and 3 years probation for the involuntary manslaughter and concealment of Donna Jou’s body.

Where’s The Justice In That?

""
Source: http://www.ocregister.com

In December 2011, John Steven Burgess was released from prison only after serving half of his already extremely short sentence. Donna’s Mom, Nili, had said that she felt even more victimized after his release from jail. She said, “It’s like pouring salt on an open sore. What kind of justice is this?”

Not Buying His Story

""

Donna’s dad, Reza, is torn apart over his daughter’s case. Despite the trial and conviction of Burgess, he still doesn’t believe the story. He decided to hire his own private investigator to search for her in the hopes that she might still be alive. He says, “I’m committed to doing everything in my power. If it takes my entire life so be it. I’m her champion.”

Arrested Again

""
Source: http://www.ocregister.com

Again, after Burgess was released from jail, he was arrested again for violating his parole. Apparently, 2 women answered another Craigslist Ad for a roommate. Burgess, who was then living at 5500 blocks of Barton Avenue in Hollywood, said the ad had read ‘free rent in exchange for cooking and cleaning.’ The two women felt uneasy once they got there, as another woman answered the door in her underwear, shaking and looking completely disheveled. Karen Rayner, and LAPD spokeswoman said, “Whatever they observed in the time they were there caused them enough concern that they contacted police.”

Her Parents Are Torn Apart

""

Despite the time that has passed, Nili Jou still thinks that her daughter is alive and being held by human traffickers against her will. Her father Reza adds, “That’s the hope all the time that I am clinging to. Maybe she is being held by someone and has been drugged and doesn’t know why so much. That’s why it hurt so much, not knowing what has happened to your child.”

A Family’s Heartache

""
Source: http://www.ocregister.com

Donna’s father goes on to say, “There is no DNA, no witnesses to see my daughter dead or alive. The district attorney of Los Angeles accepted a self-serving statement from a career criminal and sentenced him by what he said.” He adds, “We are both torn apart. We cannot be comfortable with life anymore because it’s an agonizing life for both of us.” And sadly for Jou family, until this day, they are still suffering from her loss.
