In 2011, Betsy Faria, 42, of O’Fallon, Missouri, was found lifeless inside their home. At the time of her death, she was suffering from terminal cancer. But her family didn’t lose her from the debilitating disease. Betsy’s best friend, Pamela Hupp, stood on the witness stand at her murder trial, which convicted Betsy’s husband, Russell Faria, of his wife’s murder. But after two years, Russell was acquitted, leaving Betsy’s case unsolved.

On August 16, 2016, at 12:10 p.m., O’Fallon police received a frantic rescue call, which was followed by another 911 call from Hupp. When responders arrived at Hupp’s home, she said that a man had followed her inside her house and became extremely violent. She ran up to her room, retrieved a handgun from the nightstand, and shot the intruder at least twice. The man was identified as Louis Gumpenberger.

The following reveals the chain of events that unraveled the real story behind the events leading up to the night Gumpenberger- a disabled man- was found in Hupp’s home.

Pamela Hupp was born in a devout Catholic household in Dellwood, Missouri. She was the third of four kids. Her father worked at the Union Electric for a few decades, while her mother was a schoolteacher. Pam was like most girls during her time; she went caroling with her friends on Christmas, rode bikes with them, and sometimes skipped Sunday school. She attended Riverview Gardens High School where she became a cheerleader and was described as a happy person who was always ready for fun. Pam didn’t engage in the drama and she didn’t show moodiness. She even avoided talking behind people’s backs. And because she was “boy-crazy,” according to one of her friends, her grades were only average.

By senior year, Pam fell in love with one of the most popular boys in school. He had everything going for him: he was well-liked, a member of the golf team, soccer team, and was even part of the National Honor Society. However, three months into their relationship, Pam got pregnant and they were forced into marriage. Pam’s devout mother didn’t approve of their marriage, of course. But despite doing the right thing, there was a deep sense of regret in Pam. While her friends were going off to college, she was forced to grow up quickly and take on the responsibility of raising a baby.

Her marriage ended after six years. But soon, Pam married Mark Hupp. He was described as a quiet and easygoing person who played minor-league baseball for Texas Rangers. But when he didn’t get drafted, he moved on to become a carpenter. Later, they had a son, giving Pam’s daughter a little brother. The young family moved to Naples, Florida in 1989, but later returned to Missouri in 2001, where they settled in O’Fallon. Mark and Pam started flipping houses as a side project.

Betsy Faria

""
Betsy Faria

When Pam took a clerical job at State Farm, the first person she met was Betsy Faria, who later became her best friend, despite Betsy being 11 years younger than her. Betsy was friendly to everyone and was well-known among her colleagues for a having a fun-loving attitude. Betsy’s round face, bright-blue eyes, pink cheeks, and curly hair made her look like a model.

The high-profile murder case

""Pam and Betsy stayed good friends up until 2011, when Betsy Faria, who was suffering from terminal cancer at the time, was found dead in her home, stabbed 55 times. Betsy’s death became a high-profile case, followed closely by the media. It sent shockwaves throughout the country and later unfolded a series of events which would expose the craftiness of the perpetrator. And while Betsy’s husband became the prime suspect for her murder, his acquittal has brought to light new evidence that would point all fingers to one person – Pam Hupp.

Hupp became a witness in the widely covered murder trial in the death of her friend Betsy Faria. At the time of her death, Betsy was suffering from terminal cancer. Russell, her husband was convicted of her murder. Later, he was given a new trial after his defense attorneys appealed that he should have been given the chance to present evidence of the involvement of Hupp in the death of his wife. The prosecution relented and Russell was acquitted.

Asserting his innocence

""

Observers argued that Russell was innocent. They claimed that he was falsely convicted and his acquittal made him a victim who is now seeking justice for the death of his wife. Authorities scrambled to find the real killer who continued to remain at large. Five days before Betsy’s death, she changed the beneficiary on her life insurance policy to Pam. This evidence raised more suspicions on Pam Hupp’s involvement.

A painful and costly legal battle

Betsy’s daughters fought a painful and costly legal battle in an attempt to recover Betsy’s $150,000 insurance proceeds from Pam. Unfortunately, they lost the fight and was even ordered to pay Pam’s legal fees. First, they had to endure the terrible ordeal of losing their mother in a gruesome murder. Then, they had to go through financial difficulty, which they had no control over.

Two years wasted in prison

Russell spent two years in prison before he was acquitted. His retrial, which did not call Pam to testify and where Russell’s defense attorneys presented four alibi witnesses- shed new light on the case. It was revealed that Pam was the last person to see Betsy alive. And to make matters even more complicated, a detective testified that, according to Pam, she and Betsy had been lovers.

Evidence in Betsy Faria’s murder included a note found on a laptop. The note, which they thought was Bety’s, stated that she was afraid of her husband. But Russ’ attorneys argued that it could have been planted by someone to frame him. Prosecutors believed this note was sufficient evidence to stop looking elsewhere and accuse Russell Faria – twice – of the murder of his wife, Betsy.

Then on August 16, 2016, three years after Russell Faria’s acquittal, something took place, which would help further prove his innocence. Louis R. Gumpenberger, 33, of St. Charles, Missouri, was shot dead inside Pam Hupp’s home. Pam said that Gumpenberger followed her inside the house from the driveway. Fearing for her own life, she ran up to her room to get her revolver from a nightstand and shot Gumpenberger with it.

However, police believed that Pam shot Gumpenberger in an attempt to frame Russell Faria. Investigations later revealed that Pam admitted to shooting Gumpenberger, which she claimed was in self-defense. But it was all seemed to be part of a plan that ended up terribly backfiring on her.

Accidental or deliberate?

""

Gumpenberger’s death at the hands of Pam Hupp would later set off investigations into her past- starting with the death of Pam’s mother in 2013. According to reports, Pam’s mom died right before the first trial in the Betsy Faria murder case took place. The reports stated that she fell from a third-floor balcony, but tests conducted by the St. Louis County Medical Examiner showed that there were high levels of Ambien in her system. Was her death accidental or deliberate? If it was deliberate, who could be behind it?

Mentally and physical impaired

""

It was also later revealed that Gumpenberger suffered a traumatic brain injury caused by a car accident in 2005, which left him mentally and physically impaired. As a result, his mental and physical abilities became limited and he had a slurred speech. He did not drive, nor did he have income. He was supposed to have an interview for a job he was applying for at a company that helps persons with disabilities on the day he was killed. He left behind two children.

Police say that Pam tried to blame Russell for her encounter with Gumpenberger. When responding officers arrived at the crime scene, Pam repeatedly denied knowing who Gumpenberger was prior to the encounter. She said that he repeatedly told her that he wanted her to go with him to the bank to get Russ’ money. She said that she didn’t know what Gumpenberger was talking about and that she didn’t know anyone who goes by the name “Russ.”

Pam’s own version of what happened before the incident told about how that day was just like any other normal day for her. The morning she shot Gumpenberger, Pam said she was driving around St. Charles County looking for thrift shops, after which she proceeded to drive to her daughter’s house in St. Charles City. But since her daughter wasn’t home, she headed back to her house to let her dog out.

Pam stated that as she was getting out of her car, she noticed a silver four-door sedan pulled up in front of her house directly behind her driveway. A man quickly got out of the car’s passenger side and ran up to the passenger side of her vehicle. He entered Pam’s car through the front passenger door. Meanwhile, the silver four-door car quickly drove away.

As the man entered her car, he took out a knife and stuck it to her neck. According to Pam, the man kept telling her that they were going to go to the bank to get Russ’ money. The man, according to her, kept looking back over his shoulder, as if he was worried that people might be witnessing what was going on. He also kept yelling at her.

She claimed that she got away from the man when she struck his arm with her arm, knocking the knife out of his hand. Pam quickly ran out of the car and into her house, while the man pursued her. She said he yelled that he was going to kill her. She also said that she tried calling 911 a few times. She thought that she wouldn’t be able to keep the man out of the house, so she ran upstairs to her room where she kept a gun in her nightstand. As the man approached, she quickly drew the gun and shot him.

Pam shot Gumpenberger “until the gun stopped firing.” She said she heard the gun “click” several times before dropping it. Investigations later revealed that Gumpenberger was not armed when he was found inside the house. Later it was revealed that he was only shot twice, contrary to Pam’s statement that she shot him until the gun ran out of bullets.

The note and the money

""

A handwritten note and $900 were found inside a Ziploc bag recovered from Gumpenberger’s pockets. The note, according to investigations, “appeared to be instructions for Gumpenberger to kidnap Hupp, get ‘Russ’ money’ from Hupp at her bank, and kill Hupp in order to collect the rest of $10,000. The note also mentioned the last name ‘Faria.’”

But authorities were skeptical about the authenticity of the note found on Gumpenberger. In a later interview with Pam, she said that ‘Russ’ money could be referencing the life insurance payout in connection to the Betsy Faria murder case, which she received after her friend Betsy died. Sensing that authorities were not buying her story, Pam tried to take her own life by slitting her wrist with a ballpoint pen while in custody.

A complete stranger

""

Pam claimed that she didn’t know Gumpenberger and that he was an intruder. She told police that he was a complete stranger who suddenly threatened her at an encounter on her driveway. Authorities could not also establish a previous link between Pam and Gumpenberger. However, they were able to trace one of Pam’s calls from an apartment complex where Gumpenberger lived.

When police traced the location data from Pam’s mobile phone, one of the locations where she made a phone call was within Gumpenberger’s apartment complex. The call was made between 11:25 a.m. and 11:29 a.m. on August 16. But when she got arrested, Pam refused to give any statement and invoked her right to an attorney. Although, she did admit to shooting Gumpenberger and disclosed that she still had the $150,000 from an insurance payout.

Planted evidence

Police believed that Pam used Gumpenberger to frame Russell for the murder of his wife, Betsy. They also believed that the $900 and a handwritten note found in his pockets at the time of his death were planted by Pam. The handwritten note was carefully written in such a way to make anyone who found it believe that it was an instruction for him to take “Russ’ money” and then kill Pam.

The woman from “Dateline TV show”

""

She had the murder of Gumpenberger to frame Russell planned for days and even attempted to get other people involved in her scheme. According to police, they had interviewed a woman who called 911 on August 10. The woman said that a white female in a dark-colored SUV pulled up to her while she was outside her house. The woman in the car identified herself as someone from Dateline who was driving around trying to get people to do a sound bite for an episode they were doing on 911 calls.

The woman in the car said she would pay her $1,000 up front. She would also pay her another undisclosed amount after completing the sound bite. The woman initially agreed to do it but changed her mind when the woman who picked her up couldn’t provide any credentials. She also felt that the other woman’s story did not sound credible.

The woman’s statement was corroborated by a surveillance video captured by a camera installed in her home. A review of the footage captured the SUV’s license plate which matched Pam Hupp’s. When she was shown images of Pam from a photo array, the woman identified her as the one who picked her up in a dark-colored SUV.
