Rebecca Coriam was described by friends and family as a vibrant and outgoing young woman. She was passionate about children and outdoor adventures, a quality that landed her a job at the Disney Cruise Ship, the Wonder. But things took a terrible turn one day when Rebecca mysteriously went missing while the ship was at sea. Initial investigations were immediately launched but the case was closed with unanswered questions.

Now, new evidence has emerged, contradicting key information from the original investigations.

What really happened? Did Disney officials cover-up Rebecca’s mysterious disappearance?

Born to live life to its fullest

Rebecca, or “Bex” as her family and friends fondly called her when she was just a little girl, was known for her tenacity and boldness. She was born in Chester, England in 1987. She was fun-loving and always wanted to pursue things that challenged her. She strove to be always the life of the party and she’s passionate about animals.

In fact, her passion for animals was what landed her a job at the Chester Zoo in England. For Rebecca, it was a dream come true. For a while, her life revolved around her job at the zoo.

""

But as the years went by, Rebecca thought she wanted something else, something with more purpose that aligned with what truly mattered to her. She decided she no longer wanted to become a zookeeper. So, she joined the British Army cadets. Later on, she took sports science at the Plymouth University.

Adventure onboard the Wonder

And when it came time for her to move on to a more adventurous career, she grabbed the opportunity when it presented itself. In 2010, she joined the crew onboard the magnificent Disney cruise ship the Wonder. Hundreds of job seekers turned in their application to join the ship’s crew, but only a few were chosen, including Rebecca, who was signed on to become one of the ship’s Youth Counselors.

Home away from home

""

The Wonder was Rebecca’s home away from home, which took her to places she’d never been before, such as the Panama Canal and the Mexican Riviera. It was an amazing time for her, an adventure she never knew she wanted until she got onboard.

Tragedy in the family

""

However, tragedy struck Rebecca’s family. While away at sea, her grandfather passed away. She had to fly home to England for his funeral. Little did anyone in her family know that it was the last time they were going to see Rebecca.

In constant contact

""

While at sea, Rebecca made sure to always keep in touch with her parents – Mike and Annamaria Coriam – back home using the internet. She talked to her mom through Facebook messenger six weeks after her return onboard the Wonder to resume work. Although she said during their conversation that she was going to call them the next day , it was actually the last time her parents heard from her.

A grueling wait

""

The next few hours after their last communication were grueling for Rebecca’s parents. They waited for an entire day for their daughter to call, just as she had promised. They checked their email, their phones, and messenger. They sent messages to her, but none were returned. Night time fell, and Rebecca’s poor parents grew more worried, but they still hadn’t heard back from her.

A heart-wrenching news

""

Morning came, and Rebecca’s parents’ phone finally rang. But the call was not from her. At the other end of the line was a Disney representative delivering the sad news about the disappearance of their daughter during the night.

She mysteriously disappeared

The company representative gave details of what took place concerning Rebecca’s disappearance. She failed to show up for her 9 AM shift that morning, so she was paged. But when she still didn’t show up, a crew member was sent to her cabin to check. She wasn’t there. A thorough search was conducted throughout the ship. When it was determined that she’s gone missing, an investigation was immediately launched.

Clues started to emerge

""

Security cameras were reviewed and she was last seen at 5:45 the morning she disappeared. She was on the phone in the employees’ lounge. She looked upset. A man even asked her if she’s fine. She nodded and said she was. Her parents confirmed it was her when, upon hanging up, she placed her hands in her pants’ back pocket, something that was typical of her to do.

Thorough search in and out of the ship

""

When the search inside the ship didn’t turn up anything, a joint search between the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mexican Navy began to scour the waters the Wonder sailed through. Still, nothing was ever found.

""

The investigation went ahead, but still returned no evidence nor any sign of Rebecca. Mike and Annamaria were flown to the Bahamas to help the Bahamian authorities. The Bahamian detective heading the investigation was supposed to conduct a thorough search onboard for a couple of days. But only for a day, all he did was question several crew members. He didn’t even include the passengers who may have seen Rebecca.

The captain’s “best guess”

""

The couple were transported to the ship inside a van with blacked-out windows. They were then sent to the captain’s office where the captain offered his “best guess.” He said that their daughter may have been washed overboard by a wave while she was in the pool on the ship’s front-bow. However, that may be unlikely, since the walls around the bow are high enough to prevent anyone from being swept overboard.

Completely overwhelming

""
Credit: Chester Chronicle

It was all too much for Mike and Annamaria to take. They were completely overwhelmed, tired, and heartbroken on what happened to their daughter. It was decided that the couple should rest for a while. They were taken to their daughter’s cabin to collect her personal belongings.

An unlikely clue

""
Credit: Cruise Ship Jobs Directory

Some of the items that were supposed to be of Rebecca’s that were handed over to the Coriams was a pair of flip flops. It was found by the pool, from which the theory that she was washed overboard was drawn.

""
Credit: LiverpoolEcho.co.uk

But it was highly unlikely that the footwear was Rebecca’s, according to the Coriams. It was too big to be hers, and its Hawaiian design was something Rebecca wasn’t a fan of. With nothing else to point them to where Rebecca might have gone or give them a clue as to what happened to her, the discouraged couple flew back home.

A substantial trail

""

Two months after their return from the ship, a substantial new clue emerged. Annamaria received an email from Rebecca’s bank, which notified her that someone had used Rebecca’s credit card. The bank was already previously informed of Rebecca’s disappearance, which is why they informed the Coriams about their daughter’s credit card activity.

""

It was the most substantial clue yet that they got about what might have happened to their daughter since she disappeared two months before. However, they couldn’t discount the idea that Rebecca was either still alive and in hiding or someone had stolen her credit card.

Social media activity

""
Credit: The Science Explorer

A few weeks later, another substantial clue emerged. John Jennings, Rebecca’s uncle, informed Annamaria that her daughter’s Facebook password had been changed. He knew because he had access to Rebecca’s backup password which no longer worked.

In hiding

""

After nearly a year since Rebecca mysteriously disappeared without a trace, the Coriams had been informed about the possible location of their daughter. An unidentified woman sent them an email, informing them that Rebecca was in Venice, Italy. She was almost certain that who she saw was Rebecca. She was with a dark-haired man. The Coriams wondered that if it was, in fact, their daughter, what could have pushed her to run away? Also, her passport was among her belongings that were retrieved from her cabin.

The investigative article

""

Jon Ronson of The Guardian decided to write a piece on Rebecca’s case with Mike and Annamaria’s consent. He boarded the Wonder and took the same route the trip took when Rebecca disappeared. He interviewed crew members who agreed to be interviewed anonymously. All of them agreed to one thing: that the company and the Bahamian authorities were concealing something.

""
Credit: Cruise Law News

Although most of them agree that there was a conspiracy going on, they didn’t discount the fact that Rebecca had an accident. Others believed that she was washed overboard while jogging around the deck where the railing was low. But the area described had surveillance cameras all over.

The pool hypothesis

""

Ronson dismissed the jogging theory. The most likely theory was the pool story. It was strange that the company would place flowers by the wall of the pool area the day Rebecca went missing. What was that all about?

""
Credit: Wikimedia Commons

Ronson also noticed that the walls on either side of the pool sufficiently hid the area. According to one of the crew members, the place served as a place of solace for staff whenever they wanted to go somewhere quiet and peaceful.

""
Credit: YouTube

The idea of her getting swept overboard was highly unlikely, but crew members maintained that there was a possibility. During stormy seasons, people are prohibited from going out into the decks. Crew members and staff who disobeyed this were sent home.

Was there a love triangle involved?

""
Credit: Mirror

Another angle being looked at was the possibility of a love triangle involving Rebecca, her girlfriend, and an unidentified man. Her phone conversation with another woman, which was recorded, and the possible sighting of her with a dark-haired man in Venice, Italy, seemed to corroborate this angle.

The possibility of suicide

""
Credit: Cruise Mapper

The investigations didn’t consider the possibility of suicide before, but when clues began presenting themselves, such as the love triangle story, the phone call, the possibility of her experiencing homesickness, they began to hypothesize that she may have jumped overboard. But to Rebecca’s parents, the possibility of suicide was outrageous. It never crossed their mind, because they knew she wouldn’t and couldn’t harm herself.

She was surrounded by love

""

Rebecca was described by her friends and relatives as someone who was surrounded by love and who loved life. She was passionate about happiness, which landed her job onboard the “happiest ship on the planet.” She even bought tickets to Disneyland Paris for her parents for her next visit home, as later on discovered by the Coriams. Which was why the Coriams dismissed the suicide theory as highly unlikely.

Snail-paced investigation

""

The Coriams have grown very frustrated about how the investigation was conducted. The whole process was snail-paced. Since The Guardian ran the story on their daughter, there were no further information or clues as to where Rebecca might have been. Even the people supporting the Coriams have grown dissatisfied. All Disney could give the Coriams each time they inquired about the investigation by email or phone was “The investigation is ongoing.”

Not letting up

""
Credit: Cruise Law News

No one knows for certain for how long the Coriams are going to carry the sorrow of losing their daughter, but they’re not about to let up on their hope. They are still hoping that one day, Rebecca would reveal herself and return home.
