On the night of March 18, 1990, two uniformed men entered The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. It all seemed innocent enough until you take a closer look. In reality, these two suspects weren’t cops at all. They weren’t there on official business, either. What they were about to do was pull the biggest heist of the century that, up until today, leaves experts baffled at how they were able to pull it off.

There’s certainly some form of conspiracy involved and in the years of investigation, authorities have started to put pieces together.

How It Happened

""

At around midnight, a red Dodge Daytona pulled around the side of the famous museum. Inside, the guards switched positions as one patrol ended. Richard Abath had made sure that the door found by Palace Road was locked. This was his usual routine, and that night, he did what he was paid to do and got ready to pack up and leave.

Getting In

""

At around 1:24 in the morning, two men rang the buzzer. As mentioned, they were dressed in cop uniform and informed Abath that they needed to enter. There was a disturbance in the museum’s courtyard and they needed to investigate immediately. He was instructed not to let anybody inside, but these were cops, after all. So, he opened the door. That was the biggest mistake he made.

Handcuffed

""

Abeth buzzed the men in, and one of them told him that he looked familiar and that there was a warrant for his arrest. The security guard was clearly baffled. After all, he was simply doing his job. Why was he asked to present his ID, stand, and then face the wall? Nonetheless, he did what he was told and was soon handcuffed. This was when the situation became even stranger.

Something Suspicious

""

While Abeth had his hands cuffed, he noticed that one of the cops didn’t even frisk him first, which was supposedly part of the routine. And upon closer inspection, the other man looked as if his mustache was made of wax. It became clear to him then that these men weren’t actually police officers. But what was he to do? He was in handcuffs and was basically defenseless.

Possible Help

""

Then, the other security guard arrived from his nightly patrol. The same routine happened. He was asked to relinquish his ID, stand facing the wall, and then cuffed. Abeth’s partner was just as shocked, but then they both couldn’t do much. The alarm button was behind the desk and they were far from it now.

Finding Out

""

The other security guard decided to speak up and asked why they were being arrested, and the “cops” admitted that they actually weren’t police officers. They were there to rob the museum. They then brought Abeth and his partner to the basement where they were cuffed to the pipes. But this wasn’t the only assurance the thieves did. They also wrapped duct tape around the guard’s heads, hands, and feet.

Events Recorded

""
Photo spurce: http://sensors-india.com

The museum was equipped with motion detectors everywhere. The thieves’ movements were definitely recorded, and if these men weren’t smart enough, they could easily get caught and apprehended. Nonetheless, they were quite fearless and headed straight to the Dutch Room where they headed straight to Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait. The alarms rang loudly then.

Taking Paintings

""

The men then took the painting off the wall, but the wooden panel attached to the frame was too heavy to carry. So, they left it on the floor and headed straight to another priceless collection. They still went for Rembrandt and cut out The Storm on the Sea of Galilee out of the frame itself. This was their first big steal.

About the Painting

""

The Storm was one of Rembrandt’s first paintings. It showcased his ability to represent the bible’s history as well as capture the viewer’s attention. As much as historical as this painting as and as expensive as it could be, the men didn’t stop there. They apparently weren’t satisfied with their loot. In fact, they went for other priceless treasures.

Other Stolen Items

""

The thieves also took Rembrandt’s other precious painting entitled A Lady and Gentleman in Black. The works that they nicked were from 1600s and its price could easily break the bank. And with these two works alone, anyone could live in the lap of luxury for years. Still, they wanted more and the valuables they collected were amounting to a shocking amount.

Going For More

""

The crooks also went for other items such as Vermeer’s The Concert and Govaert Flinck’s Landscape with Obelisk. Both paintings seemingly removed from the frame, with only the canvass in their hands while the wooden structure that held the artwork remained on the wall where it was mounted. Then, they moved on to other items.

Taking Items

""

The men then pilfered a Chinese bronze gu from the Shang Dynasty before moving past the Dutch Room. And as the robbers did their rounds, they were able to get more from the museum’s Blue Room: five Degas drawings, an eagle finial (that they attempted to steal with the Napoleonic flag but failed), and Manet’s Chez Tortoni.

The Socking Total

""

The men had stolen a total of 13 valuable displays from the museum and it took them two trips to get these all inside the vehicle. While they ignored other more precious artworks inside, what they had were more than significant. They had taken their time and had been inside the establishment for more than 80 minutes.

Leaving

""

Once the men had the valuables loaded up in their car, they visited the guards for the last time, telling them that they’ll be hearing from the thieves within a year. They didn’t even bother to remove the cuffs from Abeth and his partner. They just left the museum and abandoned the innocent guards there until the actual police came the very next day at 8:15 in the morning.

Initial Investigation

""

The first thing that authorities did was to check the motion sensors, security cameras, and get statements from the guards to get an idea of how the suspects looked. Then, they checked the detector records and saw that the first set of footsteps detected in the Blue Room were half past midnight and again a little before 1:00 a.m. These were the exact times that Abeth passed through as he was going around the museum.

Looking Deeper

""

Then, the cops started collecting the list of paintings stolen to see just how much the thieves got. They were flabbergasted and shocked at the amount stolen. The estimated amount was $500 million, which made this the biggest art heist in history. Now, they wanted to catch the men behind it and make them pay for the loots they collected from Isabella Gardner Stewart herself.

Valuables Gone

""

Rembrandt’s The Storm was the only seascape every known from the artist. And the Vermeer painting was one of the 34 known works available in the world, and this was also thought to be the most valuable at an estimated cost of $200 million or more. Hence, the authorities assigned to the case were more than fervent to catch the criminals.

Left Empty

""

In the months that followed, the frames that once held the paintings were never removed. They remain to this very day on the wall in the hopes that the paintings would once again be in them. More importantly, the museum has reached out to the public and offered a reward, especially for the finial. This alone would cost the institution $100,000, which would be given to whoever can hand it back to them.

FBI Steps In

""

The cops who handled the case handed it over to the FBI, thinking that the paintings could possibly cross state lines. The bigger men were here and they were willing to do anything to get what was stolen back to its rightful owner. And what they did was to conduct hundreds of interviews, with experts and authorities hailing from Scotland, Japan, and even Paris.

Coming to the Conclusion

""

After intensive research, the FBI came to a possible scenario. They believed that the men involved were actually members of a criminal organization, possibly the mafia, based in the mid-Atlantic or New England. The stolen paintings were moved from state to state before these were sold. However, after these were moved to Connecticut and Philadelphia, there were no further clues available.

Years After

""

After exhaustive investigation, the FBI stumbled upon a new clue in 2013. They believed that they finally knew the identity of the thieves. However, when the year 2015 came, the men behind the investigation found out that there suspects have actually died. Once again, they were at an impasse and they had to look for new avenues.

Baffled

""

Geoffrey J. Kelly, the lead agent assigned to the case has been left bewildered by the details he had accumulated throughout the years. He could not understand why these items were stolen when there were hundreds of more expensive collections found in the museum. As a matter of fact, there were Borticelli and Raphael paintings that the thieves must have spotted. Nonetheless, these were untouched.

Amateurs Who Had Gotten Away

""

Kelly also noticed how brutish the criminals were. They were clearly not art connoisseurs as they cut out paintings from frames and smashed some into two. Moreover, he had to retrace his steps and look into other possibilities. While the two original suspects had passed away, he decided to look at Whitey Bulger, Boston’s top crime boss and an FBI informant. He also considered the fact that the heist could have been organized by the Irish Republican Army.

Not Enough

""

Unfortunately, while Kelly did have other names on his list of suspects, there just wasn’t enough proof to link anyone to the actual heist. In fact, some people believed that the items stolen were actually destroyed. Nevertheless, he couldn’t give up. He just couldn’t accept this as the truth. So, the reward that was given in 1997 was increased. From $1 million, the leak could receive a total amount of $5 million.

Missing Evidence

""

Then, the FBI decided to take the DNA route. However, the evidence collected went missing. The authorities had the duct tape and the handcuffs that possibly contained evidence of the thieves. Unfortunately, no one was able to collect these items from the lab. It seemed as if these items disappeared into thin air.

Lost

""

The security guards that expected for the call from the thieves within a year waited in vain. No call ever came. Museum Director Anne Hawley also received a letter that promised to return the stolen items as long as they gave $2.6 million. If she was amenable, she needed to publish a coded message in the business section of The Boston Globe. The instructions were followed to a T, but nothing ever came out of it.

Reviewing Tapes

""

Again, tapes from the CCTV tapes were reviewed. While the two thieves were unrecognizable, the authorities considered Abeth’s involvement. However, it was concluded that the security guards didn’t have the imagination needed to pull off the complicated heist. And again, they had to look elsewhere for potential suspects.

Possible Perpetrators

""

The FBI was able to come up with a substantial number of possible suspects, many of them were art thieves, heads of gangsters, and mafia leaders. While some witnesses told them that it was given to certain people, many of them could not give them proper proof. Or, some of them claim that they no longer remember the events that transpired.

Still A Mystery

""

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist, to this very day, has remained an enigma, a mystery that the FBI could only hope will be solved soon. Anthony Amore, the museum’s security chief has been working closely with the experts. He continues to be optimistic about solving the case and says that he continues to get substantial clues from callers every now and then. He, like the rest of the team on the case, are out to collect facts, not theories. And from the information they’ve gathered, they’re now piecing these facts together in order to solve the case sooner rather than later.
