It’s difficult to use the words hero and killer to describe the same person in the same sentence. But for the story of Douglas Parkhurst, both words ring true. The Vietnam War veteran had taken over 40 years to confess to a hit and run of an innocent 4–year-old girl who had died, but he had also saved a bunch of lives of a team of Little Leaguers.

See why his story has finally come full circle, and while his family mourns, another one can now live in peace.

A Friendly Afternoon Baseball Game

On June 1, 2018, a bunch of kids were gathered on a baseball field in Sanford, Maine for a little league game. Parents, siblings and friends, which made up around 200 people, were all gathered in the stands watching the kids as they indulged in a friendly game of ball.

Little did they know, 51- year old Carol Sharrow, also a resident of Maine, happened to be driving her car while completely inebriated. And to the utter dismay and panic of both players and bystanders, she would plow straight into the field where innocent children were left helpless to her drunken devices.

When people began to notice that the car was headed towards them, they began to scream and run in any direction they could to get to safety. According to 13-year old pitcher Zachary McMurtry, “Everyone started screaming and for a second I froze then realized I had to get out of there.”

At first, Sharrow’s car would head through the baseball park before careening towards a metal fence. Thankfully, there was a 68-year old Vietnam vet named Douglas Parkhurst, who happened to be in front of a group of kids as the car was headed their way. Incredibly, he would get the children out safely in his attempt to keep them from getting hit by the driver.

An Act Of Bravery

One witness shared, “I saw the car pull out of the gate right over there and this guy had some kids with him. The older guy pushed the kids right out of the way. He took the hit for the kids.”

Amazingly, none of the children were hit by Sharrow because of the heroic deed of Parkhurst. According to one of the witnesses, Justin Clifton, “After the car got off the field, [the driver] came to the gate…” But in his attempt to close the gate against the upcoming vehicle, he would end up getting hit by Sharrow.

Parkhurst Was Watching His Grandson

Sadly for Parkhurst, he just happened to be watching his grandson playing baseball when the crash occurred. And while he had bravely made sure that the kids were saved and not a single one of them was hurt, wistfully for him, he wasn’t as lucky.

According to another bystander, Karyn Bean, she shared, “A car driving through the gate hitting a man who was pushing kids out of the way, then her driving up the road easily doing 50 to 60 miles per hour past us. It felt awful because we couldn’t do anything.”

Being Rushed To The Hospital

Soon enough, paramedics arrived on the scene in order to rush Parkhurst to the hospital. But during the ride in the ambulance to the medical center, he died while in transit, never even making it to the emergency room.

Supposedly, Sharrow attempted to flee the scene but thankfully law enforcement were able to catch up to her. And they would find out that Sharrow had quite a sordid past, in spite of her friends claiming that, “she wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

Upon checking Sharrow’s records, it would be found out that she had two prior arrests for driving under the influence of both alcohol and illicit drugs. One conviction happened to be in Maine, while the other was in New Hampshire. And apparently, the use of alcohol and drugs weren’t her only issue.

Mentally Unstable

When the news was released that it was Sharrow who was behind the wheel that had killed Parkhurst, her friends would explain on her behalf that she ‘suffered from mental illness.’ One particular friend even went on Facebook to share, “… Even though I may get slack by saying this, and I’m not excusing what this woman, my best friend, has done, doesn’t mean she’s an animal…”

Even other people in the community who knew Sharrow shared that she was actually quite a “nice” person. And while she attempted to remain mentally healthy, it would seem her demons would get the best of her at times. One particular person who knew her explained, “She was fine as long as she was on her medication but when she went off her medication, she would be irrational and had a drinking problem.”

Being Charged With Manslaughter

While in custody, Sharrow would be charged with manslaughter since Parkhurst had died from the impact of her car, hitting him during her drunken road rage. Heartfelt Gratitude

The baseball league wanted to share their sentiments regarding Parkhurst’s death, releasing a statement that said, “We want to share our heartfelt gratitude that physically all of the players from Babe Ruth and Little League are safe and our deep sorrow to the family of the brave man that gave his life tonight protecting others.” But in spite of his heroic deeds, little did people know that Parkhurst also had his own dark secret that he had been keeping for so long.

He Had A Major Secret Of His Own

""
Source: https://oswegocountytoday.com/

All the way back in 1968, Parkhurst and his brother, who was passed out at the time, happened to be driving in his hometown of Fulton, New York one night. Parkhurst would end up hitting a 4-year-old girl named Carolee Ashby on evening of Halloween, forcing the child to fly an incredible 133 feet away as she was struck by his car.

Carolee happened to be walking with her 15-year old sister Darlene to a nearby store. They were heading there to buy some candles as they were going to celebrate Darlene’s birthday. And that’s when the car would come down the road and suddenly hit little Carolee, throwing her through the air.

Someone Thought It Was A Teddy Bear

At the time of the accident, Parkhurst happened to be 18-years of age and he and his brother had been drinking on that fateful night. A witness who had seen it go down had actually thought that the car had hit a teddy bear since it had flown so high into the air. But when he got a closer look, he would see that it was actually the body of a little girl that had been struck.

He Was Questioned By Police

""

When Parkhurst was questioned by the authorities in his possible involvement in the accident, he had told them that he had hit a guard post. And although he later on shared that he didn’t see any people walking on the street, at the time, the police also didn’t pursue him in the case despite the evidence they had on him. That was, at least, until some 44 years later.

Her Family Was Heartbroken

""

For Carolee’s family, they would live over four decades never having justice for the death of their beloved little girl. They would have no choice but to bury the innocent little girl without ever getting the justice they deserved from her death. But then something would happen many years later that would finally help them find the closure they needed.

Finally, A Breakthrough

""
Source: https://fthmb.tqn.com/

In 2013, Parkhurst finally confessed to the hit and run when a police officer had come back to question him in the events that had occurred on the night of Carolee’s death after someone had made a comment on Facebook so many years later. Despite the young girl’s mom continuously trying to get answers to what had happened to the person who had killed her daughter, it took over 44 years to finally get her answer.

Admitting To The Crime

""
Source: https://heavyeditorial.files.wordpress.com/

Parkhurst would end up writing a 4-page confession about what had happened that evening when he hit Carolee that night. He had said he consumed around 3 beers, while his brother was passed out at the back of his car. He had written, “While I drove through the city of Fulton, I heard a thud. It sounded like I hit a dog. I don’t know where I hit that thing. I don’t remember seeing any kids but I believe in my heart I hit the little Ashby girl with my car.”

He Was Never Charged

""
Source: https://image.syracuse.com/

Although Parkhurst had originally claimed that what he believed he had hit was a post, he later on recanted, saying, “That did not happen, but I don’t know why the police never challenged me on this. I wish they did and I would have told them the truth.” But due to the fact that the statute of limitations in his case was expired, he ended up choosing to confess also knowing that he could no longer get charged for the girl’s murder.

Waiting For Him To Say Sorry

""
Source: https://heavyeditorial.files.wordpress.com/

Sadly for Carolee’s family, Parkhurst’s public apology came too late as her mom had passed away without Parkhurst apologizing to them directly. Carolee’s sister even said, “My mom publicly asked him for an apology and she forgave him and he still did not reach out to her. My mom, she went through her life looking for answers and questioning people.”

Parkhurst’s Apology

""

Parkhurst would give out a statement that said, “I know it my heart and I am 99.9 percent sure I hit that little girl with my 1962 tan Buick Special. I am oh so sorry. I can’t change anything but I hope this apology will be accepted and I beg for forgiveness.”

Unusual Coincidence

""
Source: http://www.sanfordfl.gov/

Even the police officers involved in the case found the circumstances to be quite strange, considering that Parkhurst’s death basically happened in the same way that he had killed that young girl so many years before. Sanford Police Detective Sgt. Matthew Jones, “Mr. Parkhurst appears to be the victim of circumstances of being where he was when he was. It’s probably one of the most unusual set of circumstances that I’ve ever come across. There seems to be a lot of coincidences in this case, which is certainly the strangest I’ve seen.”

Irony At Its Best

""
Source: https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/

For Carolee’s sister, Darlene McCann, ‘the irony of his death was lost on no one.’ McCann said, “I am overwhelmed by it all. He left us all these years with nothing, not even an I’m sorry.” And while Parkhurst’s family is now in mourning, Carolee’s family can finally find peace.

Coming Full Circle

""
Source: http://media.syracuse.com/

McCann continued by saying, “God works in mysterious ways. It feels it has made a full circle. Now I am relieved. I truly am. The same thing that happened to my sister happened to him. It made a complete circle. Now it’s time to move on.” And finally after 44 years, they finally can.
