Haven For Humanity is an exciting project with the aim of encouraging people to harmonize with nature and learn self-sufficiency methods. The project founders describe it as a “budding paradigm-shift community center and natural hygiene inspiration center”, set in the Catskill Mountains in New Haven, upstate New York.

The not-for-profit project was started by the Kovalyov family in 2011. They had been considering the impact of our modern-day rat race existence on human health, stress levels and the environment, and decided to build a place where an alternative, natural lifestyle could thrive.

“We are passionate about re-connecting with what it really means to be a human being,” says Sam Kovalyov in the video above. The aim was to build a blue-print for a new, harmonious existence with nature, and demonstrate how green our future could be.

The family, along with volunteers, have built a futuristic bioenergy greenhouse dome, designed with room for over 600 organic and aquaponic fruit and vegetable plants, a host of fresh-water organic fish, gourmet mushroom logs, fresh-water organic clams, and hundreds of gallons of fresh organic compost.

Inspired by research by NASA, the large moat on the interior of the greenhouse contains large amounts of organic matter and algae which act as nutrients for plant growth and fish food, and can also be turned into natural gas through the use of an anaerobic digester. This gas will be used to run a generator as well as any natural gas appliances, allowing for near complete self-sufficiency at the location.

The project is set to open its doors to the public this summer 2015, and will offer a range of workshops and learning opportunities including raw-vegan cooking classes, yoga and meditation to name a few, as well as allowing visitors to explore (and feast on) its beautiful 40-acre edible forest. Find out more here and watch the video above to see how the biodome technology works in action.

Haven For Humanity is an exciting project with the aim of encouraging people to harmonize with nature and learn self-sufficiency methods.
