While Connecticut was the first state to end chronic<\/b> veteran homelessness,<\/a> Virginia is officially now the first US state to end all<\/strong> <\/i>veteran homelessness, a monumental achievement, indeed.<\/p>\n

As of Wednesday, the state of Virginia has officially ended chronic veteran homelessness, stated Governor Terry McAuliffe.<\/a> According to the\u00a0Huffington Post<\/em>,<\/a> the milestone declaration means that every veteran<\/a> in the state has housing,\u00a0except for those who were offered shelter, but declined.<\/p>\n

The state press release shares<\/a> that by streamlining resources and having the Department of Veterans Affairs, public housing groups, local utility companies and other key partners collaborate on the conundrum, Virginia has been able to house 1,432 veterans since October 2014.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

The state will need to maintain its status, but Virginia has plans to secure a home for a veteran within 90 days upon finding out that they are homeless. The state will also have more homes readily available than the number of veterans without shelter <\/a>to prevent the issue from presenting itself again.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Governor McAuliffe committed to first lady Michelle Obama\u2019s Mayor\u2019s Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness <\/a>and was able to carry out with the objective ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n

The initiative presented by Obama called for an end to veteran homelessness<\/strong> by the end of 2015. Since it was first declared in June of last year, 20 mayors and county chairs throughout the state have joined in.<\/p>\n

McAuliffe said this recent success will serve as the \u201claunching pad\u201d<\/em> to end chronic homelessness<\/a> for all Virginians by the end of 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important victory in our ongoing efforts to make our Commonwealth the best place on earth for veterans to live, work and raise a family,\u201d<\/em> McAuliffe said in a statement. \u201cHowever, we must remain committed to keeping homelessness among veterans<\/a>, and, all Virginians, rare, brief and non-recurring.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One state down, 49 to go<\/em>. This positive news<\/a> hints at a better future for America\u2019s veterans and, therefore, deserves to be shared.<\/p>\n
