You\u2019re basically a granny or an auntie to some truly special babies fighting for their lives in Neonatal Infant Care Units (NICUs) all across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These poor babies are born with a drug addiction, but lots of love and snuggles from volunteers just might be the prescription for healing. Unfortunately, drug addiction rates are rising around the country, which is resulting in an increase of neonatal abstinence syndrome, where the child inherits the mother\u2019s addiction in the womb.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86550\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86550\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-86550 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-9.jpg 730w, https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-9-400x291.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/laundry\/4208959358\/\">Beth<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As a result, they require a lot of extra care when they are born, as they are going through an excruciating process of withdrawal. As\u00a0noted earlier, however, specially-trained volunteers may just be the answer to saving these babies\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that incidents of NAS have increased 383% in the United States since 2000. That\u2019s almost quadruple!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That\u2019s why these cuddle care\u00a0programs have popped up across the country to help babies born addicted to opioids. The volunteers are a welcome respite for the already-overwhelmed nurses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--Ads7--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Pennsylvania nurse Jane Cavanuagh knew she had to do something to help as substance-abuse rates soared in her home state. So, she started a volunteer program at\u00a0Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-86549\" src=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-9.jpg 730w, https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-9-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThese babies going through withdrawal need to be held for extended periods,\u201d she explains. \u201cThey need human touch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Maribeth McLaughlin, chief nursing officer and vice president of Patient Care Services at\u00a0Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh couldn\u2019t agree more. She also oversees a group of cuddle volunteers at Magee, who\u00a0help soothe at-risk babies who can\u2019t soothe themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From what she\u2019s seen, it works.\u00a0McLaughlin reports that, on average, babies in withdrawal who are held often require less medication and go home sooner than babies who aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201c[Cuddling] is helping them manage through these symptoms,\u201d she says. \u201cThey are very irritable; they are hard to console. This is about swaddling them and giving them that comfort and safe, secure feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If snuggling babies sounds like something you want to be a part of (I mean, really, who wouldn\u2019t?) then you\u2019re in luck.
