They were said to be a happy, lively group led by an experienced hiker, but the weather was uncooperative. They were scheduled to leave on January 25, 1959, during one of the coldest months of the year, which would probably lead into even further colder climates as the days passed. He, alongside all the other hikers, was known to be an experienced trekker. They took a train ride up to Ivdel in Sverdlovsk Oblast, then a truck up to Vizhai. Little did they know that on the very next day, one of the hikers would end up getting lumbago, which is basically joint and muscle pain in the lower back. 21-year-old Yuri Yudin decided to turn back to Vizhai while the remaining 9 hikers would continue on their journey. It would seem from their photos that they were a happy and merry bunch. The harsh weather couldn\u2019t seem to dampen their spirits. Possibly, they had heard a rumbling in the night, which caused them to panic and run out of the tent as quickly as possible.
