That is, unless they commit the heinous act in the \u201cZone of Death,\u201d a remote area in Yellowstone National Park where anyone can apparently get away with murder \u2014 even after confessing the crime.<\/p>\n<p>This discovery was made by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.msu.edu\/faculty_staff\/profile.php?prof=44\">Brian Kalt<\/a>, a Professor of law at Michigan State University. In 2004, Kalt was looking for interesting material for a paper when he stumbled across the judicial &#8220;no man&#8217;s land.&#8221; Because <a href=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/hundreds-of-bison-to-be-killed-in-yellowstone-national-park\/\">Yellowstone National Park<\/a> geographically covers three US states \u2014 and only one has legal jurisdiction over the entirety of it, it is \u201cvirtually impossible\u201d to get a murderer on trial.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/kalt_brian.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most of Yellowstone is in Wyoming, but small parts fall in Idaho and Montana. While that doesn\u2019t mean much to the average person, it opens up a very big loophole for criminals. Kalt recognized that under Article III of the United States Constitution, federal criminals are required to be held in the state in which the crime was committed. But according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/slovenia-declares-water-a-human-right-by-amending-constitution\/\">Sixth Amendment<\/a>, a criminal defendant has the right to a trial by jurors living in the state where the crime was committed. As a result, it would be nearly impossible to convict an individual who committed a crime in the 50-square-mile uninhabited area of the park in Idaho, according to Kalt.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/zn8nnw\/theres-a-50-square-mile-section-of-yellowstone-where-you-can-get-away-with-murder\">told<\/a> VICE Magazine:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe more I dug into it, the more interested I got. People have this fascination with uncovering a loophole for the perfect crime. There are a lot of different approaches to it. But in terms of geography, there\u2019s just this one spot.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kalt had, indeed, found the perfect subject matter for his article. There was only one problem: he feared the \u201cwrong\u201d person would benefit from his finding and commit a murder in the zone. To prevent this from occurring, the Professor published a paper and sent copies to the Department of Justice, the US attorney in <a href=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/this-vacant-lot-in-wyoming-will-be-the-worlds-first-vertical-farm\/\">Wyoming<\/a> and the House and Senate judiciary committees. As Oddity Central reports, his home was they would close the loophole, making his article a \u201cwhat might have been\u201d type of story.<\/p>\n<p>Kalt was so ambitious for the Yellowstone Zone of Death to be erased, that the drafted legislation language in his letters. Reportedly, it was three lines long and suggested dividing <a href=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/new-law-could-legalize-discrimination-against-lgbtq-youth-and-families-in-adoptionfoster-care\/\">Yellowstone<\/a> into three federal districts. Each of the states would get jurisdiction of the portions that fell on their land. Surprisingly, no action has been taken as of yet. \u201cI naively thought that once Congress found out about this, they\u2019d think it was a problem worth fixing and they\u2019d fix it,\u201d said Kalt. \u201cBut nothing happens in Washington just because it\u2019s a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/milky-way-916523_1920.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"486\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--Ads7--><\/p>\n<p>US judiciary authorities may have ignored the law Professor, but the media quickly scooped up the story. NPR, the Washington Post, the BBC and even Japanese news outlets published content on the Zone of Death. Fortunately, no one has tested Kalt\u2019s finding \u2014 as far as we know. Even if they did, they would likely find themselves in jail sooner or later. This is because the entire <a href=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/dnc-staffer-seth-rich-leaked-44k-emails-to-wikileaks-before-his-murder\/\">murder<\/a> would need to be orchestrated in Yellowstone, otherwise, the perpetrator could be charged with \u201cconspiracy to murder\u201d in another district. The person could also face civil lawsuits, like getting sued by relatives of the victim.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAll of these things reduce the incentive,\u201d said Kalt. \u201cIt becomes harder to imagine someone relying on my theory and getting away with it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, if authorities don\u2019t do anything, the likelihood of somebody doing something regrettable in the zone increases. \u201cI\u2019m less concerned about the odds than the stakes,\u201d the law Professor concluded. \u201cI don\u2019t think something is likely to happen, but it would be really bad if it did. If Congress really wanted to fix this, it wouldn\u2019t take long at all.
