Young Ukrainian Inventor Presented With 2023 Dyson Award For His Life Saving ‘The Life Chariot’

As the conflict unfolded in Ukraine, young Polish inventor Piotr Tłuszcz was moved by the challenges faced during medical evacuations across the challenging terrain of the frontline.

Witnessing the difficulties faced by the Ukrainian Defense Forces, particularly in utilizing car boots for transporting casualties, Piotr was inspired to create a solution – The Life Chariot, a MEDEVAC off-road ambulance designed to attach to any vehicle with a towing hook or eye.

Piotr’s innovative design addresses the need for safe and efficient medical evacuations, especially in areas with rough terrain. The Life Chariot is characterized by its low weight and suspension, ensuring a safer mode of transport for casualties compared to traditional methods. The often-stretched Ukrainian Defense Forces can benefit from this off-road ambulance, providing a reliable means of evacuation the injured.

Piotr’s journey into designing trailers started with family off-road trips through the Balkans and Pyrenees. Over the course of a decade and during his pursuit of bachelor’s and master’s degrees, he dedicated his efforts to designing off-road and cave rescue trailers. The culmination of his expertise and passion resulted in The Life Chariot, which made its debut at the Łódź Design Festival this year.

The Life Chariot serves to enhance the evacuation capabilities of rescue teams, offering space for one injured person on a stretcher and two additional seats for medics or lightly wounded individuals, which you can see in the following video.

This thoughtful design ensures a versatile and practical solution for emergency situations. The off-road ambulance has been tested in diverse terrains, including mountain trails, forests, caves, and mines, proving its adaptability and effectiveness.

The first two prototypes of The Life Chariot were generously donated to the Ukrainian Medical Military Unit and the Polish Voluntary Medic Unit of the Damian Duda “W Miedzyczasie” Foundation.

Sir James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer at Dyson, said in a statement, “This year the James Dyson Award gives a special Humanitarian prize to Piotr, who has designed an ingenious way of recovering injured people from challenging terrain.”

“The Life Chariot can be towed by anything—allowing medics to do their life-saving work with the resources they have at hand. It’s also brilliant to see his iterative design process continue in response to feedback from those using it on the ground,” he added.

These organizations played a crucial role in testing the trailers in challenging terrains, providing valuable feedback that led to weatherproofing upgrades. Piotr’s commitment to refining his invention based on real-world applications demonstrates a dedication to improving the functionality and reliability of The Life Chariot.

Looking ahead, Piotr remains focused on implementing further upgrades to The Life Chariot, drawing insights from feedback received from medics working on the front line.

Additionally, he is exploring the adaptation of the vehicle for mountain rescue purposes, showcasing a commitment to continuous improvement and versatility in addressing emergency response needs.

Piotr said on the occasion of the award, “I hope that The Life Chariot, with support from the James Dyson Award, will continue to save lives, whether in frontline evacuations or rescues from accidents in inaccessible places.”

The Life Chariot stands as a testament to creative thinking and the potential for individual efforts to make a meaningful impact in times of crisis.
