In 2000, President Trump made a short bid for president as part of the Reform Party. He even gained the support of Jesse Ventura, who had the idea of running as his vice president. President Trump dropped out of the race, but even so, he managed to win the California and Michigan primaries. Apparently that short bout of elections was enough to prompt him to want to go ahead with another bid that has proved to be quite successful.
