Beautiful Canadian Island Offers Refuge For Americans If Trump Wins

Created by one of the island’s citizens, Cape Breton, which is one of Canada’s islands, is being offered up as an alternative home for Americans seeking refuge from a possible “President Trump.”

Rob Calabrese, a radio host that lives on the island, made a website detailing the highlights of Cape Breton and why Americans should consider relocating there should Trump win the election. He says it took just a few hours to make and it was launched, fittingly, on Presidents’ Day in the US.

He says his idea for the project came from the fact that, “Every American election, you have a group of people — usually Democrats — who say, ‘That’s it, I’m moving to Canada’ if a Republican wins.” He adds, “Hey, if you’re going to move to Canada, why not move to Cape Breton?”

Calabrese touts the island’s best features in terms of policies on the website, by saying,

“Start now, that way, on election day, you just hop on a bus to start your new life in Cape Breton, where women can get abortions, Muslim people can roam freely, and the only ‘walls’ are holding up the roofs of our extremely affordable houses.”

This island seems to be a stark contrast to what America will become if Trump were to be elected president, with his anti-women and Muslim hate speech and his disregard for the lower and even middle class.

Though Calabrese did not expect the widespread reaction that he has gotten, he says he’s pleasantly surprised that people are actually interested in the offer. One person he’s named is a professor from Cornell University, who reportedly contacted Calabrese and asked him some questions. “They’re asking genuine questions about things like the immigration process, the economics. It’s been taken seriously by some people, which is great and not intended, but I’m going to help them out as best I can.”

He adds that, although it is Canada, the weather really isn’t that bad. It’s comparable to the weather in the Northeast region of America, which can vary year by year and clearly many Americans have adapted to living there.

The island, although the citizens seem genuine and kind, does have somewhat selfish reasons for extending the invite in addition to simply wanting to help out Americans should the scariest candidate ever become president. Their main industries, mining and fishing, have declined in recent years and younger people have been leaving more often for bigger opportunities elsewhere. Calabrese points out that, “It is a good place to live, a beautiful place. The people are great — we just need more people.”

Cape Breton seems like a beautiful refuge with citizens that are open-minded and very welcoming. If Trump becomes president, it may be a good idea for those looking to leave to consider this gorgeous Canadian island.
