Though some would maintain that climate change is a “hoax” invented by the Chinese, the general consensus among reputable scientists is that the threat of global is very real and that some effects of the crisis will be witnessed within the next few decades. To inspire more people to care about the effects of rising carbon emissions and the greenhouse gas effect, artist Nikolay Lamm partnered with Climate Central to create a series of visualizations that show what some of the world’s major cities will look like as ice caps melt and sea levels rise as a result.
As My Modern Met shares, the images show major cities, including Shanghai, London, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Durban and New York City, flooded with water, with streets and building submerged.
The frightening images were released in pairs: one shows the world how it might look if global temperature increase is limited to 2°C or 3.6°F. Reportedly, this is the “best case” scenario predicated by scientists. Even if humans manage to reduce their carbon emissions and invent technologies capable of slowing climate change, cities will still be affected.
The second set of images shows the likely results if world governments refuse to enforce climate change initiatives and citizens ignore scientists’ and environmental advocates’ advice to live more sustainably. Reportedly, sea levels could rise by as much as 14 to 32 feet (that’s 4.3 to 9.9 meters).
It’s time to wake up and “be the change” one desires to see in the world. Humans – particularly in first-world nations – are using the amount of resources required for over four Earths. Sustainable living is the only way forward.
