Spending $9,000 a night had become a norm for Saunders. He also helped a homeless man by giving him a room at Hilton Hotel for an overnight stay. It seemed as if money grew on trees for him. Then one night, he collapsed at the foyer of Sydney’s Shangri-La Hotel. His heart was hammering on his chest and he started sweating bullets. He wondered what was wrong with him. His stress had been so apparent that he got help immediately. Then, the doctor told him that he apparently was having a panic attack. That was because he had stolen so much that he was at the point of no return.

Going On

Despite the panic attacks and the constant feeling of guilt, this routine went on for years. The bank didn’t know at all and Saunders was shocked at how long he was able to get away with the crime simply by finding a loophole. Nonetheless, he celebrated each day as if it were his last because he knew he was going to jail for this. The spending spree was bound to end sooner or later, and he was prepared for whatever punishment that would come his way.
