Smith wanted to leave the Canyon because the moment she saw the tire marks, a creepy feeling that something bad had happened to Melanie suddenly crept into her consciousness. Was Melanie dead? Was she too late to save the nurse? Maybe she should go back into the van and just forget about everything, but she just couldn’t get herself to do that.
