The police continued their search for the killers. Eventually, they gathered enough clues from eyewitnesses that pointed them to the direction of three men with no connection to Smith whatsoever. These men, Spencer Nelson, Louis Carnell Morgan, and an unnamed 17-year old minor, were arrested for murder on December 23, 1980. Soon after, they were all charged and convicted to life imprisonment. So, was this the vindication that the psychic was waiting for?
