During those times, it was common practice to put dead bodies on display in case someone could positively identify the body. Unfortunately, the young girl didn’t have a single person who could say who she was, or how her body had ended up in the River Seine. But despite that, her haunting death mask began receiving recognition and fame when copies were made and used as ‘artwork’ in shops in France and Germany.
