On October 27, 1954, a tropical depression observed in the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines gradually gained strength and reached typhoon status on November 1, 1954 as it passed north of the southeast asian country. Typhoon Pamela crossed into the South China Sea as a Category-5 super typhoon, one of only three typhoons to reach the South China Sea with such intensity. Pamela made landfall west of Macau with winds reaching 175kph, the strongest recorded in the area since the turn of the 20th century.
