Although Typhoon Irma was the strongest Typhoon of the 1971 Pacific Typhoon Season, the potentially destructive storm stayed mostly at sea and limited its damage to islands in the West Pacific. It held, at the time, the record for the fastest intensification for a storm with its atmospheric pressure dropping a staggering 95 millibars from 980 to 885 within a 24-hour period.

Super typhoon Carla, more notoriously known in the Philippines as Typhoon Trining began forming in the West Pacific on October 10, 1967 before intensifying in the Philippine Sea 5 days later. It inundated northern Philippines, pouring 47.86 inches of rain near the country’s summer capital, Baguio City. It proceeded to Taiwan in a weaker state but dumped an overwhelming 108 inches of rain, causing floods and leaving 250 dead.
