The One Thing People Are Missing About Melania Trump’s Plagiarized Speech

In the outrage over Melania Trump‘s Republican National Convention speech, the internet has churned out some critical articles regarding the plagiarized parts and Twitter has started #FamousMelaniaTrumpQuote. The hashtag is humorous in that it names popular quotes from other people but jokingly claims they are from Melania.

Several chunks of Melania’s speech were lifted straight out of Michelle Obama’s speech in 2008, which is horrible and ridiculous, but many are missing something obvious (and terrible) that came straight from Melania’s official statement about the incident.

Below is the official statement posted on Melania Trump’s Facebook page earlier today.

“In some instances [the speech] included fragments that reflected her own thinking,” the statement confesses.

First of all, Melania originally claimed that she wrote the speech herself which, as it turns out, is not true. She had a team of writers prepare her speech for her, just as Michelle likely had many people produce her perfect speech back in 2008.

This is hardly news, as speech writers have been around since the beginning of the U.S. presidency, or at least that’s what Alexander Hamilton was expected to have been for George Washington. So what’s being overlooked here?

It’s the tiny fact that politicians have simply become very powerful and very sneaky actors putting on a show for voters.

Melania’s speech writers simply took notes on what she believes in and apparently, only some parts of the speech they wrote for her actually reflects her own thoughts. What are Americans to believe when they hear politicians speak of reform and laws that the politicians hadn’t even heard of before they read the speech on the teleprompter?

Speechwriters are simply a collection of people who believe they know what the American people want to hear, based on focus groups and polls. They then take those results and put together the right words for the politicians to say. On some occasions, the words are a reflection of a thought a politician at least had in passing- hopefully. On other occasions, the speeches may contain none of their original thoughts.

The rhetoric is spectacular and the speeches are entertaining, but that’s not what Americans want in their policy makers, especially not in their executive branch. Politicians are nothing more than news anchors reading a report that someone else wrote.
