Everest Explorers George Mallory and Sandy Irvine

These two explorers George Mallory and Sandy Irvine attempted to make the first assent of the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest, in 1924. The explorers did not survive their attempt and were last seen on the North Ridge. This is the last photograph taken of them during an assent that would not ultimately be achieved until 1953.

Many people worldwide know this date by heart without any further information because it was a fateful day thought to have changed the course of history. Though there is much controversy over what really occurred on this day, the official story is that 19 al-Qaeda terrorist group members boarded 4 different flights and hijacked them.

Their intention was to attack buildings in Washington, D.C. and New York City and their attack on the World Trade Center towers were the most tragic and heavily covered by news. In total, the attacks claimed the lives of 2,996 people and the photograph above is of United Airlines Flight 175 crashing into the South Tower.

James Dean, a popular actor in the 1950’s, is seen here about to drive off in his Porsche in 1955. Immediately after this photo was taken, he sped off to attend a sports racing competition when he crashed and was killed. An icon for teen angst with a career that grew more quickly than others, many believe that Dean would have grown to be a long-lasting star like Marlon Brando.
