In 2012, a sight-seeing hot air balloon in Carterton, New Zealand struck several power lines and caught fire. The incident left all 11 people aboard (10 passengers and 1 pilot) dead, making it the third deadliest hot air balloon accident in history. The photo above shows the balloon and its carriage on fire just after hitting the power lines.

1961 U.S. Figure Skating Team

In 1961, the U.S. figure skating team was traveling to the World Championship in Belgium to compete. During their landing in Brussels on February 15th, the Boeing 707 that they were all aboard crashed, killing all 72 passengers and the farmer whose land they crashed on. The cause of the crash was never determined, but mechanical difficulties were suspected.

1976 Ebola Outbreak

The first outbreak of Ebola in 1976 killed 280 of the 318 people that contracted the disease. Nurse Mayinga N’Seka is pictured here just days before she succumbed to the virus.

These photos are eerie, as they depict people and events that left scars on the families and cities impacted by the tragedy before many of them knew what would become of them. It’s a simple lesson in cherishing every moment (and photograph) because it may be your last.
