Families of the modern age are as diverse as the people that built them. From same-sex parents to ethnically diverse couples, few families are exactly alike anymore – and that’s a good thing.
To capture the face of the new modern family, photographer Michele Crowe traveled the world – from Amsterdam and Italy to India and France – to shoot portraits for the “Universal Family.”
The collection is a testament to the growing insignificance of the status quo and the diverse faces that challenge it.
As The Plaid Zebra shares, the experience restored Crowe’s faith in the underlying altruism of human behavior and the desire to live in a society of togetherness. And, she found out, there is no better place to observe the gentleness of human nature than the living rooms of families across the globe.
What makes a family? According to Crowe, a family is an irreplaceable support system for one’s mental health and general well-being.
“…that support system is the most important thing in the world; it should not be judged or limited. Families can be big or small, blood-related or not, same sex oriented or not, and of course composed of similar or wildly different cultural backgrounds. I believe if you’re lucky you truly understand that love has no boundaries,” she said.
