During the 22 days Sherri went missing, the Papini family decided to hire a private investigator named Bill Garcia. He told People Magazine that he believed her case could truly be linked to that of a sex trafficking operation. He said, “I literally got the chills. I know who it is, I know who did this.” Garcia continued, “Because of the injuries, the broken nose, apparently she had other burns, the discoloration.” The only thing is, due to Sherri’s age, she doesn’t actually fit into the typical characteristics of most sex trafficking victims because they usually choose much younger girls.

Despite all the injuries Sherri apparently sustained from her 3-week ordeal, she didn’t spend more than a few hours at the hospital, not staying the night. As the authorities continued to look into her case, certain oddities began to come out of the woodwork. Speculation grew that what happened to Sherri was the result of a hate crime. Apparently, when she was younger, Sherri, who still carried her maiden name Graeff at the time, was said to have gotten into fights with Latinos in her hometown of Shasta Lake. This was due to her supposed writing on a blog, “drug-free, white, and proud of my blood and heritage.”
