Even though you have a sliding lock that shows ‘Occupied’ when you enter that tiny little area that makes up the lavatory on the airplane, you’re not truly locked in. Due to the necessity of crew members to be able to get everyone seated during an emergency situation, they can actually open up the doors to the bathrooms at any time they want with a latch found on the outside of the doors. In fact, the doors are made in such a way that with just a small push, it will come bursting open, allowing crew to get inside no matter how red that occupied light is glowing.

17. Bathroom Cleanliness

Just like most public bathrooms, the airplane bathroom is also probably one of the dirtiest areas on the plane. Not only because there are an immense number of people using one place to do number 1 and 2, but also because the cleaning crew aren’t given much time to get through the entire plane to thoroughly clean it. This basically means that they only have around 5 – 10 minutes to get through each cubicle, which surely isn’t enough time to clean a place that hundreds of people use in such a short period of time. And don’t even think about taking off your shoes. If the other areas are filthy, the floor is a cesspool of an unbelievable number of microbes thriving there.
