Renee led successful skirmishes with the revolutionary army, winning her first battle and claiming 17 kills for herself. She was a fearsome fighter, much respected by her Royalist brothers-in-arms and feared by the Revolutionaries for her skill on horseback, sabre and rifle. Her legend became known following the 200 battles she fought, gaining the ire of no other than the Napoleon Bonaparte who would pay 40,000 francs for her head. When her compatriots found out that Hyacinth was in fact a woman, nothing changed and continued to rally her on, calling her “The girl who fights like a lion.”
