Despite her reputation, One-eyed Charley had an important contribution to women’s history in the United States. In 1867, the tough cowboy once known as Charlotte Parkhurst, registered to vote in California under the guise of One-eyed Charley, making her the first woman to vote in an American Election, an act worthy of mentioning in the books of history as back in the 1800’s, women had no right to vote, a privilege everyone now enjoys equally between the sexes thanks to continuous lobbying by women’s groups during the time. One-eyed Charley’s identity as a woman was only revealed upon preparing her body for her funeral, a total shock to people as even her voice sounded male. The hoarseness, later on found to be caused by years of tobacco-chewing, was also part of what actually killed her in the end: mouth cancer.
