Electromyogram (EMG)

The doctor inserts a needle electrode through your skin into different muscles. It evaluates the electrical activity of muscles when they contract and when at rest. Abnormalities seen in muscles in an EMG can help diagnose ALS or if you have a different nerve or muscle condition that may be causing your symptoms.
