Putin has worked to increase Russian territorial claims in the Arctic. Submarines and troops deployed in the area have multiplied and some unusual war drills have taken place. For example, the Russian military has practiced making the entire city of Severomorsk disappear by using a gigantic smoke screen. “Its attempt to hide the city is a part of a military exercise,” Russia’s northern fleet announced.
