As the chase began, the Thunder’s crew abandoned work on its aft deck and headed straight inside. The ship then moved faster through the icy waters, trying its best to escape. The Barker stayed close behind and soon found themselves in The Shadowlands, a vast and isolated stretch in the Antarctic region that housed one of the world’s most hostile waters. From this Banzare Bank stretch to the next major port was a good two weeks worth of journey, a fact that most captains would not even consider venturing into. Nonetheless, the pursuit was on.

So where was the Sam Simon when all these happened? The vessel actually tracked the Kunlun, another vessel on the wanted list. The captain and the crew had to remain in Thailand and after a while there, spotted the Yongding, another sea bass poacher. The Simon was able to successfully detain the two ships. However, the FV Thunder remained the top prize. The environmentalists behind the Sea Shepherd and its allies prioritized procuring all the illegal netting that the Thunder left in its wake.
