After Kim Jong-Il took over his father’s reign as the leader in North Korea, it would seem like the country was headed further down the path into nuclear power and creating weapons of mass destruction. In August of 1998, they supposedly sent a satellite out to be used for their Kwangmyŏngsŏng program. The satellite was launched right before the 50th anniversary of North Korea’s independence from Japan. Although no one can say for sure that they knew the reason behind it, the one thing that was certain was that it was proof that North Korea was slowly building its missile capabilities.
