A Rare Infection

Several other cases were documented in other parts of the United States, but infections caused by Naegleria fowleri are rare. The CDC states that only fewer than 10 cases have been documented throughout the country annually. But of the 138 cases reported over the last 50 years, only three others survived.

A tiny but potent killer

The Naegleria fowleri is a free-living organism which feeds on other bacteria. It causes severe brain infection. This bacteria is found in warm freshwaters, like rivers, lakes, hot springs, and ponds.
