The authorities immediately got wind of the story and went to Steven’s house immediately, hoping that the baby had survived the ordeal. Unfortunately, Bennett had been fatally shot first before he went on a shooting spree. Upon hearing the news, Steven’s mom broke down and told cops about how upset her son had been and how she believed his story.

The cops had questions about the case. Four people had died in one day, and in the hands of a man who believed his world had ended when his wife broke up with him. The court that gave custody of the baby to Steven’s mom also believed that no harm would come when they set him free on bail. For them, she was going to be the child’s rightful guardian.
