18. Dry, Thick and Rough Skin (Hypothyroidism)
The thyroid and its hormones regulate a number of different processes in our bodies, including cell growth and repair, particularly of the cells found in the skin. A decrease in thyroid hormone levels slows down skin regeneration, causing the shedding and replacement of old and damaged skin cells to take more time. When this happens, the outer layer of skin begins to thicken and itch, giving it a dry and rough appearance as it accumulates more damage.
