It would seem like the Japanese have strict etiquette to follow when dealing with the hands. When taking an item, even food or change from a vendor or while in a store, you should never give or take anything from anyone using just one hand. Rather, you use both your hands to accept or hand over whatever it is that needs to be exchanged.
