Kole decided to tie a loop with the rope, and have the boy wrap it around his body. The boy, whose name was Ralph Chartrand, was finally pulled out of the freezing river via towing. Thankfully Kole’s plan worked, and he was able to rescue the boy before he froze to death. 16-year old Devisscher was awarded for his ‘herioc act,’ to which he responded, “I hope someone else would do that for me if I was in the same situation.”

Story Seven: Taking A School Hostage

Like many other sad mass shooting stories, there was one particular incident that happened in a school in South Dakota, ended in a positive way for once. On September 11, 1991, Ryan Harris, who was only 17-years old at the time, went inside his former school, Stevens High School in Rapid City, carrying a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun. He forced the teacher to leave the class while keeping 22 of his former classmates hostage.
