Lousiana Pancake Batfish

Here’s another odd-looking creature which many of us thought only existed in our collective imagination: the Louisiana Pancake Batfish, which was discovered only in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. This species owes its name to its odd, pancake shape, with flattened and enlarged head and body. It moves like a bat as it ‘walks’ on the ocean floor. It mainly feeds on invertebrates which it lures with chemicals to catch. They are small, about the size of the palm of a human hand.

Pinocchio Frog

The Pinocchio frog is a tree frog which also goes by the name Spike-Nosed Tree Frog. It was discovered – by accident – only in 2008 by the International and the National Geographic Society in the Foja Mountains. It got its name from its elongated nose. It has the ability to inflate its nose during mating season. The Pinocchio frog mainly preys on insects and they live primarily high up on the trees.
