Getting A Black Eye

The cancer in Derek’s body had spread everywhere, giving him a black eye like many patients with nueroblastoma often get. Derek hated it, as it made him feel embarrassed and afraid of what it could mean, worried about getting brain damage. His mom put up messages by his bed, hoping they would help Derek remember how many people love him and are supporting him. But it was still hard for the 11-year old to understand why this was even happening at all.
