An Elusive Mystery
The Hunley quickly descended to the seabed after the explosion but the sailors did not experience any fatal damage from this. One of the ship’s pipes was broken, huge gushes of water entered the ship and it was destroyed in three minutes, and though much has been learned about America’s pioneer combat vessel, much remains to be discovered. It seems that the Hunley will continue to be one of the mysteries of the Civil War.
