16) Hitler’s Assassination
Unsurprisingly, there were several (obviously unsuccessful) attempts to assassinate the German leader Adolf Hitler. When things started to get out of hand for the Germans during the war, word spread that many high-ranking Nazi officials intended to assistants Hitler to save face.
Colonel Henning von Tresckow recruited Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg to join the conspiracy in 1944. The plan to assistant the leader responsible for millions of deaths plan was known as “Operation Valkyrie”. Hitler survived Operation Valkyrie, however, and later died a year later when he took his own life. At least, that’s the ‘official’ story. The tale was eventually made into a big budget Tom Cruise movie.
