Not sufficiently protected
Although it seemed that Jennifer and Kourtney made sure to put on their boots and coats before heading out, they were not sufficiently protected from the below zero temperatures outside. They had no hats and mittens on.
A little adventure on their own
The investigations also determined that the girls went on the back porch where they had left their backpack. It looked like they tried getting back inside through the back door, but it was locked. So, they probably thought they should set out on a little adventure further away from the house.
