During digestion, the food we eat is broken down in order for the nutrients to be easily absorbable in the gut. The capacity of food to be transformed into glucose is called its glycemic index. The higher the glycemic index of a certain food, the more it is likely to cause a rise in blood sugar levels. By being conscious about our food’s glycemic index, we will be able to choose which ones to eat and which ones to avoid in order to control our blood sugar.

Foods with low glycemic indices include seafood, meat, eggs, oats, barley, beans, lentils, legumes, sweet potatoes, corn, yams, most fruits and non-starchy veggies. Remember, it is still important to watch your carbohydrate intake and portion sizes.
