According to Copple, he doesn’t actually remember most of what transpired that night. He just knew, that what was supposed be his wedding day, was a night that he found himself all alone. Lieberstein says on his behalf, “He claimed that while he had some memory of leaving his house and taking a knife, that he didn’t know how he ended up at the house on Dorset. He remembered smoking the cigarette out front, remembered going in the window but didn’t remember much else. He would not admit that he knew what he did. He knew he was responsible but he claimed his eyes were closed.”

Copple explained to the authorities that he has no recollection of what he did with the knife he used to kill the two friends. He didn’t even give a reason for killing Leslie. Rather than go through a trial, Copple made a deal with the District Attorney and plead guilty to First Degree murder for both women. Due to this, he was given a life sentence but no death penalty.
