Finding His Place

Phil was well-loved by everyone who worked on SNL. He would even gain the nickname ‘The Glue,’ due to the fact that he kept the show on track and made sure that other cast members didn’t take things too far. He would even share himself, “As an actor, I felt I couldn’t compete. I wasn’t as cute as the leading man; I wasn’t as brilliant as Robin Williams. The one thing I could do was voices and impersonations and weird characters, and there was really no call for that. Except on Saturday Night Live.”

Getting Married Three Times

Phil would also go on to get married three separate times. His first wife Gretchen Lewis, whom he married in 1970, only lasted for less than two years. Then 10 years later in 1982, he would marry his second wife, Lisa Strain. She would complain that Phil was emotionally unavailable and lost in ‘his own world.’ So after three years into his second marriage, things would fall apart completely, and they too would separate. Then he would meet Brynn Omdahl, and it would seem like things were finally going to be different this time around, and they were, just not in a good way.
