Several guesthouses and hotels in the United States are marked by Interesting histories. The Liberty Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts is no exception. It was, for over a century, Charles Street Jail—former home to notorious law-breakers and criminals. But after an elaborate, $150-million, half-a-decade renovation, there now stands a luxury hotel that is drawing local and foreign guests. Boston.com aptly calls the hotel “a new wine in an old bottle” because it retains its jail-like structure that makes for a historic and unique hotel right in the heart of Boston.

 

Within the 120-year existence of the Charles Street Jail, several individuals have “come and go,” so to speak, including this group that was freed in 1932. According to LibertyHotel.com, the hotel’s official website, Memorial Day weekend 1990 marked a new beginning for Charles Street Jail as the last batch of inmates were transferred to the new prison in Suffolk County. The government called for the preservation of the building, which eventually led to the rise of The Liberty Hotel.
