33-year old O’Leary would be charged with ‘28 counts of rape and associated felonies.’ And after being in jail for a year, he was finally sentenced to 327-and-a-half years in prison for his vicious attacks, the maximum sentence allowed. When given a chance to speak in court, he said, “I am a sexually violent predator and I’m out of control. I’ve been out of control for along time… Words are just inadequate to describe, uh, how just horrible I, you know, I’ve acted… I can only hope that, you know, that my sentence today will satisfy them.” Thankfully, he will never step out of the Sterling Correctional Facility in Colorado ever again, and this alone, is probably satisfaction enough.

After hearing about the story and what had happened during his capture, Netflix decided to make an 8-episode series about him called ‘Unbelievable.’ The story will center around the two detectives who fought long and hard to finally bring a prolific and highly intelligent serial rapist to justice, and how one young girl, Marie, was able to get her life back again. And if there is anything to be learned from this at all, as Det. Galbraith explains, always ‘listen to your victim,’ whether you necessarily believe them right off the bat. It might just help you solve crimes much faster, and more importantly, before anyone else can get hurt.
