The pain in the joints felt by gout sufferers is always accompanied by swelling of the affected area. This comes as a result of the inflammatory response of the body to the unusually high amounts of uric acid crystals which cause irritation and damage to the joint spaces. The response causes an increase in size in the area surrounding joint, resulting in some limitation of movement. It also makes the wearing of shoes, clothing or accessories very uncomfortable, making a patient less able to function normally.
