“How do you do?” or “How are you?” isn’t a signal for you to ramble on about how your day went or go on a lengthy rant about things are at the office. Small talk is part of civilities in the UK and people you’ll encounter will probably ask you this as a casual way to say “hello.”

The correct and polite way to respond when asked is “I’m fine, thanks. How are you?” Maybe you could insert a smile in there too.
